The history of Sümela Monastery, which is located in Maçka district of Trabzon province and built like a secret castle on the mountain slope, dates back to very old times. It is believed that it led the construction of two priests from the Byzantine period of 375. It has been used as a monastery since its establishment.
It remained important before the Ottoman period and after the Ottoman period, its rights were preserved under the Ottoman rule, and it continued to operate as a monastery. During World War I, the monastery was under Russian occupation and was completely emptied.
The monastery contains a separate beauty with ceiling and wall decorations. Within the monastery, there are sections such as churches, chapels, kitchens, rooms, and holy writings. Located on the mountain slope and with a single entrance, the monastery fascinates its visitors with its unique view.
Climbing up a steep road, the monastery conveys the air of the period to the visitors in the best way. With the opening of the monastery, which was restored in 2019, it continues to be an important visiting point for the region.
