Sumela Monastery 5;
Sumela or “Meryem Ana” Monastery is located on a steep cliff at the foothills of Karadag dominating Altindere Valley in Macka town. Its elevation is approximately 300 m. It is said that “Sumela”, the name of the Monastery, comes from the word “melas” meaning “black”. The interior walls of the rock church within the monastery are all covered with frescoes. It took its present form in the 13th century. In the 19th century, together with the addition of big buildings, it acquired its amazing profile.
